چکیده
OBJECTIVE To determine whether there is a difference on the bone architecture in patients with femoral neck fracture compared to patients with intertrochanteric fractures and assess the importance of aging on bone microarchitecture in patients with proximal femoral fracture. METHODS Biopsy of the iliac crest was made in seventeen patients between 55 and 90 years old who were admitted to the emergency room with fractures of the proximal end of the femur. After a small fragment was removed, we made a histomorphometric analysis of it. RESULTS There was no significant difference between patients with femoral neck fracture and trochanteric fracture in structural parameters, formation and resorption. Comparing age groups we also did not find any significant change between the groups in the parameters volume and trabecular separation. CONCLUSION There are no difference in the morphometric parameters analyzed between the different types of fracture and age is not a significant factor in the alteration of these parameters.

Effects of Hip Geometry on Fracture Patterns of Proximal Femur
Background: Some studies have previously shown that geometry of proximal femur can affect the probability of fracture and type of fracture. It happens since the geometry of the proximal femur determines how a force is applied to its different parts. In this study, we have compared proximal femur’s geometric characteristics in femoral neck (FNF), intertrochanteric (ITF) and Subtrochanteric (ST...
متن کاملA histomorphometric study of osteomalacia in elderly females with fracture of the proximal femur
Using standard histomorphometric indices on bone biopsies of trabecular bone volume, osteoid volume, the trabecular osteoid surface, the extent of the calcification front and the number of osteoid lamellae, a histomorphometric diagnosis of osteomalacia was made in three of 28 elderly female patients with fracture of the proximal femur. These patients also showed biochemical changes in the serum...
متن کاملLonger Length of Stay Increases 1-year Readmission Rate in Patients Undergoing Hip Fracture Surgery
Background: Proximal femur fractures are prevalent among the elderly and associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and early readmission. Early readmission is gaining popularity as a measure of quality of hospital care and canlower reimbursement. A better understanding of the patient and treatment characteristics associated with readmissionmay help inform program improvement initiatives....

متن کاملThe Most Appropriate Reconstruction Method Following Giant Cell Tumor Curettage: A Biomechanical Approach
Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a primary and benign tumor of bone, albeit locally aggressive in some cases, such as in the epi-metaphyseal region of long bones, predominantly the distal end of femur and proximal end of tibia (1). There are a variety of treatments for a bone affected by GCT, ranging from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, embolization, and cryosurgery, to surgery with the use of chemical or...
